When you go to the chiropractor for the first time, you may be curious about what you can expect. Here is some information to help you feel confident at your first appointment.
Before You Arrive
Before you visit us for the first time, we will send a patient questionnaire. Fill this out thoroughly so we can have a good understanding of your pain or other symptoms. Plan to arrive a few minutes early to your appointment, and bring your insurance card.
Your appointment will begin with an initial consultation and evaluation. Then, your chiropractor will ask a long list of questions about your health history and current symptoms. If your symptoms are due to an accident, like a car accident, we will also discuss the details of the accident.
Next, we will do several examinations. We may ask you to walk, demonstrate flexibility or bend over so we can assess your spine’s curve. Often your chiropractor will measure your legs. Having a shorter leg usually indicates pelvic misalignment.
Finally, we will do a series of x-rays. These allow us to see inside your spine and get accurate measurements of your subluxations and other misalignments.
Your Treatment Plan
Your chiropractor will suggest a treatment plan with the information gathered from this initial assessment. Each patient’s treatment plan is unique to them, considering their health, age, and the cause of the injury.
Your treatment plan will likely include a combination of chiropractic adjustments, laser therapy, lifestyle changes, and exercise. We want to help you feel your best, and we believe we should partner together to achieve that goal.
Typical treatment plans include multiple chiropractic adjustments a week for a few weeks, gradually tapering off as the body adjusts. Of course, the extent of your injuries and subluxations will also dictate how long this initial treatment plan lasts.
Finally, your initial appointment will end with your first adjustment, if appropriate. Then, you will leave with an appointment for your next adjustment and a plan for your healing.
How Long Does Your First Chiropractic Visit Take?
Because of the x-rays and diagnostic tests, your first chiropractic visit can take 45 minutes to an hour. Subsequent visits will be much shorter, but make sure you plan enough time for this initial appointment.
What Should I Wear to My First Chiropractor Appointment?
A common question we hear about chiropractic appointments is what you should wear. When choosing an outfit for your first chiropractor appointment, opt for something comfortable that allows you to move freely. Loose clothing is the best choice because your chiropractor will want to assess your movement. However, a skirt or dress isn’t ideal, because you may have trouble moving in one. Also, avoid dressing in layers because the added bulk will make your chiropractor’s job harder.
